Uber is expanding its partnership with OpenAI by making ChatGPT Work available to more than 30,000 employees worldwide, according to TechCrunch and OpenAI.

The rollout follows an earlier pilot involving about 1,000 workers from departments including finance, operations and product. Uber told TechCrunch that roughly 80% of those early users were non-engineers.

How Uber says employees are using it

During the pilot, employees used the tool to analyze operational data, identify trends, develop recommendations, localize training materials and build interactive dashboards for day-to-day work. OpenAI describes the broader rollout as supporting research, data analysis, presentations and complex workflows.

Uber has not established a single companywide playbook for the technology. Sumanth Sukumar, the company’s vice president of engineering, said teams will have room to experiment while Uber studies how the tool is used and which workflows it improves.

The company has also tested a more hands-on approach through “AI pods,” pairing 30 AI engineers with internal teams for two-week efforts to automate parts of employees’ jobs.

Uber did not disclose the cost of the ChatGPT Work deployment. Instead, it plans to track usage, the workflows employees create and the effect on their work as it decides how to expand AI across the business. The rollout gives OpenAI a large enterprise deployment as it continues building its business software presence.
